Impact scores estimate how much good a volunteer contribution typically creates. Education and health roles score highest because they directly improve individual lives. Community building and environment roles score well but may need more volunteers to show results. Administrative roles support the organization but have lower direct impact scores.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overestimating availability: Be honest about your schedule. Saying you're available when you're not leads to missed commitments and disappointed organizations.
  • Underestimating skills: Many volunteer roles need soft skills like communication and reliability more than technical expertise. If you've done any work with the public, you probably have relevant skills.
  • Ignoring travel time: Choose opportunities within a reasonable commute. The emotional reward of volunteering drops when you're exhausted from travel.
  • Not following up: After contacting an organization, send a brief email or call within 48 hours. Quick responses show reliability and increase your chances of getting the role.
